Artist Statement

Gale Mueller Whitman

I have always been fascinated with the human body and with the colors, patterns, and timeless beauty of the natural world.  In my art, I attempt to honor and celebrate the things I see.  Whether it’s a drawing of a nude model, a landscape, portrait, or an abstract painting, I hope my art brings the viewer some reassurance in the goodness of the human spirit, and joy in appreciating the world around us.

Most of my work begins with a pencil or pastel sketch.  I have been drawing since early childhood, and it is my most primal, direct way to channel my visions onto paper.  I usually add watercolor paint or pastel color to ‘flesh out’ the artwork.  The line/paint combination reminds me of many other parallels in life: reason/intuition; control/freedom; timelessness/fleetingness; left brain/right brain.

In my current endeavors, I wish to experiment more with color and ‘looseness’.  I was a medical illustrator for 10 years, which was a perfect fit for my partner right and left brains: my artistic side and my scientific, detail-oriented side.  I am eager now to nurture my creativity and watch it blossom!  I hope that the passion and reverence I feel for life comes through my artwork, and connects in an authentic way with others.
